R.W.McKenzie Resource Fund for Teaching and Research in Aeronautical Science and Technology
Formation
In July 2007, the Board of the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at The
University of Sydney approved the establishment of the R.W. McKenzie Resource Fund for Teaching and
Research in Aeronautical Science and Technology, established from the bequest of the late Marjorie Nell
McKenzie. Mrs McKenzie had a long established relationship as a benefactor of the original Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the Universty of Sydney
and it was eventually agreed to establish the center in memory of her late husband Robert William McKenzie. The naming of the center is in
recognition of Captain McKenzie's distinguished service to the Australian Flying Corp effort during World War I.
A resource room has been especially dedicated for use by the center in the Aeronautical Building.
It is situated in a prominent location at the entrance on level 1 of the Aeronautical
Engineering Building. It is intended to facilitate the holding of publication resources.
It also provides accomodation for The University of Sydney
Student Branch of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The McKenzie Center resource room is regularly
used by students to enhance their professional development and their learning experience in Aeronautical and
Space Engineering.
In 2008, the R.W.McKenzie Supplementary Scholarship in Aeronautical Science and Technology has been
established to encourage research training in Aeronautical Engineering. The supplementary
scholarship is awarded to a student starting a postgraduate research degree and who has been awarded an APA or equivalent Scholarship. The supplementary scholarship is awarded for the normal
duration of a PhD candidature.
The R.W.McKenzie Resource Fund also supports the purchase of equipment and resources for the Aeronautical teaching and research programs. A number of
current projects are being funded to enhance facilities in the areas of flight mechanics, smart structures and UAV design.
